Francesco Corda

Industrial Biotechnologies for the Circular Economy

Biography

Francesco Corda is an Environmental Engineer specialized in Climate Change, with experience in microalgae production and in environmental impact assessment of products obtained through industrial biotechnologies.

He is currently working as a Process Engineer at the agricultural company Livegreen, based in sunny Arborea. Here, he serves as Operations Director at the largest Italian facility for the production of the cyanobacterium Spirulina Platensis. From the birth of the cultures to their propagation, through monitoring, harvesting, processing, and refining, Francesco oversees every stage of work involving the world’s most famous microalga, widely used in the nutraceutical, food, and feed sectors. Indeed, Spirulina today represents the most popular source of natural blue coloring on the market and is recognized by the scientific community as a superfood with many health benefits for both humans and animals. In addition to production and field activities, he designs and sizes small and medium-scale Spirulina production plants for both Italian and international clients.

Previously, he worked on the environmental impact assessment of new products derived from GMO microalgae, with a focus on reducing water use, resource consumption, and emissions, at Phycoworks in London.
Among his projects is also a long series of studies on the use of agro-industrial effluents as a nutrient source for microalgae, with a view to upcycling waste from other processes.

With a Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering and a Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering, he spent several years as part of one of the most successful student teams at the Polytechnic University of Turin, the Policumbent Team, where he honed not only his engineering skills but also his human resource management abilities.

Francesco combines curiosity with scientific rigor. He is a lover of nature in its wild state, but also of nature intelligently and respectfully placed at the service of humanity. He firmly believes that engineering solutions for the future must be critically analyzed to achieve strong sustainability. He is convinced that to face the challenges of this century, it is essential that young people do not succumb to boredom but instead tackle problems with creative solutions born of study and ingenuity.

Always active in his free time, he currently volunteers with the regional Civil Protection service, where he engages in active wildfire fighting and serves as a Liaison Officer for foreign teams deployed in Sardinia during fire emergencies.

A gardening and hiking enthusiast, he also never misses the chance to catch a wave on his surfboard whenever the opportunity arises.
